HOW TO BE A BETTER SHOPPER: Top 10 Tips

Over the weekend I’ve done a bit of shopping after the shoot therefore the casual outfit. On my way home I thought how exhausting shopping can actually be if done chaotically. And if you add money and time spent then at times you would be better off not even bothering with it. So I thought, yep, it’s time to put together a list of ‘rules’ or better said tips on how to be better at clothes shopping. Over the years I’ve learnt what helps me to stop throwing money out the window and minimise the chances of buying clothes that end up on a hanger at the back of the wardrobe and still have the label on months later.

10. You need to be in the right state of mind. If you feel tired, bored, sad or you’re in any negative mood you need to be careful as you’ll end up buying things that you don’t necessary need just because you think they will make you feel better. Believe me, I’ve tried it… all you do is fool yourself and end up wasting your day. 

 

9. Don’t start body-hating when clothes don’t fit right! Try and be rational for a second: we’re all unique and a mass-produced piece of clothing labelled with a random size doesn’t really say anything about your body!

 

8. Pay with cash. Research shows that we tend to pay between 20-50% more when we shop with cards. We’ve all experienced those ‘tap-tap’ moments which can make us feel like we’re not using real money. Unfortunately, those credit card fees are very real! 

 

7. Create wish-lists for key items at your favourite stores. Keep an eye on prices and alternatives. As long as you know what you want you’ll be able to prioritise and make informed decisions when purchasing.

 

6. Know when to spend money and when not. Have a mix of high and low end brands for a balanced wardrobe and of course budget. Lovely underwear, meticulously designed accessories, designer shoes I would invest in. When it comes to let’s say tank tops and leggings, not really. H&M would be just fine. Use your judgement to decide what’s most important to you and what’s really worth your cash.

 

5. Buy clothes you would wear on a daily basis, not those you would love to have in your fantasy world. Of course, if you randomly find a perfect special occasion dress, you should just buy it, even if you have no special occasions on your calendar; we all know how difficult it can be to find that special dress the day before the event. Apart from that do your best to buy things you really need and would wear rather than things you wish you could fit into after you’ve lost those 3 kg that have been nagging you for a while now. Don’t do it, go back when you’re ready to shine in that piece of clothing.

 

4. Don’t remove the tags. Wait a few days or even a week to think it through. Remove the tags once you're sure you'll enjoy your new item.

 

3. Don’t wait to go shopping until you have to. Plan in advance and check out trends and colours for the upcoming season way before new collections hit the stores. You could definitely find your basics during the summer sale. Inform yourself and shop smart. 

 

2. Picture it. Whenever you’re unsure on buying something you should try and picture it in your wardrobe. If you can make it be part of at least three outfits then go for it. If however you struggle with even finding one other item to pair it up with then don’t waste your money!

 

1. Reduce, Rethink, Organise! Decide upon your needs and shop with a list. Once you’ve done your preparation and made it to the shops make sure you choose quality over quantity. In general, you’ll get more value/wears out of decent clothes rather than doing the ‘fast food’ approach to new clothing every season. Learn to live with less, layer basic summer clothes during the winter for a different look. Try this, it can be a real adventure.
